Last year, Jlin teamed up with choreographer Wayne McGregor to piece together a show called Autobiography, premiered at the Sadler’s Wells theatre in London. Autobiography Edits took place in Toronto Toronto afterward, a condensed version where Jlin plays with the dancers on stage.
Jlin provided the soundtrack for that commission and it will receive a full release in September via Planet Mu. Above, from the soundtrack, you can hear ‘The Abyss Of Doubt’.
The label is keen to point out that this release is not the producer’s third album, in the wake of her first two LPs, Dark Energy and Black Origami. A release for her third album, Planet Mu says, is planned for sometime next year or in 2020.
"We first met face to face in October 2016 in a downtown Chicago hotel, talking for about a solid two hours," Jlin says of McGregor. "Immediately, I saw Wayne was very friendly and energetic. He’s brilliant, witty, and knows exactly what he wants; an absolute gem to work with.
"Before I even started composing for Autobiography, Wayne told me so gently that he trusts me completely with my direction of creating the score. That was the best feeling in the world. I would wake up at two in the morning and work until six in the evening until I completed all the pieces. We were both very happy with the outcome. Creating the score for an impeccable piece of work such as Autobiography changed my life as an artist."
Jlin will be touring with Company Wayne McGregor performing the show through this year in addition to completing a commission for the Kronos Quartet titled ‘Little Black Book’.
She returns to Kraków’s Unsound in October for another live performance. For more information on that, head here. Planet Mu will release Autobiography on September 28. You can pre-order the album here, and catch up with our recent feature in which she and Max Richter interviewed each other here.
