Emptyset’s James Ginzburg Unveils New Album

'crystallise, a frozen eye' is out in May

Emptyset’s James Ginzburg is releasing a new solo album on his own Subtext label next month.

Titled crystallise, a frozen eye, the album was produced late last year. It explores themes of isolation, mortality and safety, and the release will come with a chapbook detailing the issues that the album covers. You can listen to lead track ‘the eyes, behind —’ just below.

The 11-track release was mainly composed with acoustic instruments, including an acoustic guitar, Daf drum, Appalachian dulcimer, psaltery, shruti box and a bespoke string instrument that was originally created for Emptyset’s 2017 album Borders. The only electronic equipment used was an analogue synthesiser.

This is Ginzburg’s second album under his own name, following 2018’s Six Correlations, which also came out on Subtext. The artist also released an album as part of Emptyset, Blossoms, on Thrill Jockey in 2019.
