James Ellis Ford has shared details of his debut solo album, The Hum.
Spanning 10 tracks, the record marks the producer’s signing to Warp Records. His step into working on a solo record follows on from his work as one-half of Simian Mobile Disco, and as an in-demand producer and songwriter for the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Kylie Minogue and Foals. He started work on the record after Simian Mobile Disco went on hiatus, following bandmate Jas Shaw’s diagnosis with the rare disease AL amyloidosis. You can listen to lead cut ‘I Never Wanted Anything’ above.
"The lack of having Simian Mobile Disco as an outlet to make music for myself probably forced my hand to make a solo record," Ford said in a statement. "I was making tracks and thinking, ‘Maybe I’ll send this to [Arctic Monkeys’] Alex Turner’. It genuinely did cross my mind that I could make an album with a lot of guest features, but it just felt braver for me to do it on my own."
Warp Records will release The Hum on May 12, 2023.
