The jailed members of Pussy Riot are set to be released from prison following an amendment to an amnesty law passed in Russia this morning, report The Guardian.
Maria Alyokhina (above, centre) and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova (right) may be let out as early as tomorrow after the Russian parliament’s landslide vote in favour of passing the bill at its final reading today. The amendment, which coincides with 20 years of Russia’s constitution, will also free the 30 Greenpeace activists who had been charged with hooliganism for protesting at the oil platform Prirazlomnaya in September.
Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova, along with a third member of the protest group, Yekaterina Samutsevich, were arrested for performing a "punk prayer" at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow last February. Each were sentenced to two years in prison in August, though Samutsevich’s sentence was suspended on appeal in October.
