Over the weekend, Jack White and his label, Third Man Records, made history after their successful attempt to play the first phonographic record in space.
They launched a ‘space-proof’ turntable in a vessel called ‘the Icarus Craft’, which they attached to a high-altitude balloon and as it reached the highest possible height it could reach, the turntable played 2010 single ‘A Glorious Dawn’ from Carl Sagan. You can watch a video of the feat above.
The launch happened somewhere outside of Marsing in Idaho and when the record would end mid-flight, the tonearm would pick up and start it from the beginning again. The flight lasted an hour and 20 minutes and after reaching a height of 94,000 feet, the balloon popped and the vessel plummeted to earth.
