Dean Blunt & Inga Copeland – the duo sometimes (formerly?) known as Hype Williams – are set to release a new album, Black Is Beautiful, on 16th April. Their first full-length to be released through the increasingly wide-ranging Hyperdub label, it keeps the hallmarks they’ve already established – short, elegiac synth sketches; thin, reedy melodies; prickly samplework – but further expands their range, adding a scattering of pop-leaning songs and careful, coherent sequencing. Their usual surreal humour remains firmly in place, too: look carefully in the background of the header photo of this piece (which they provided) and you might just spot the duo heading back to the nineties and giving Cool Britannia a kick up the backside.
In advance of its release they’ve put out the following teaser trailer. It finds them on typically cryptic form, with a short monologue promising that "when I beckon her, I will return to claim what is mine, and things shall never be the same again. It will be the end of the world as you know it."
The album’s artwork is below. Its fifteen tracks are all untitled, save the opener, which goes under the name ‘(Venice Dreamway)’.
