Last month’s Raw Power Festival, spread over two days at Tufnel Park’s Dome venue, was a fine health check for the UK peculiar music underground, with everyone from Circle to Guapo and Sex Swing to the preposterous Lumninous Bodies playing magnificently-received sets. My personal highlight though came from Saturday’s opening act, Hirvikolari. Comprised of half of Teeth Of The Sea (Mike Bourne on modular synths, Sam Barton on brass) their allotted half hour of lunchtime was a gorgeous, transportive wander across a luminous veld, taking in grubby techno and hinting a Coil’s Musick To Play In The Dark via a tripping colliery band, falling down an unguarded shaft after being led astray by Jon Hassell. You can now hear that set via The Quietus’ soundcloud above, and might like to note that they’ll be playing at the Redchurch in London tonight. The Redchurch has the finest ale in the capital, and is near Cambridge Heath Station – full info on the gig can be found here. Hirvikolari will also be playing with Chrononautz and Sly & The Family Drone at a forthcoming Quietus gig to be announced soon. Oh a final note: we had thought that Hirvilokari was Finnish for "giant cocked elf" but apparently it is the Finnish word for "accident involving a motor vehicle and an elk".
