Hiawatha Bailey Documentary Fundraising

New documentary in the works that tells the story of the musician and activist

An Indiegogo campaign is underway for the upcoming documentary The Song of Hiawatha, which documents the life of gay African-American and Native-American activist and musician Hiawatha Bailey. As the "first black hippie" and the only non-white member of the White Panthers, Bailey’s narrative is particular and sorely lacking from many accounts of 60s and 70s counterculture.

The documentary picks up "amid race riots, Black Panthers, White Panthers, The MC5 and The Stooges, FBI surveillance, a Supreme Court case, a four-year prison stint, punk rockers, metal kids, jazz and blues musicians," among other subjects.

Human Features Film, the company behind the production, are offering anything from movie merch to rare vinyl in exchange for support for their Indiegogo campaign. To read more or to contribute, click here.
