In 2015, David Lynch held a showcase of his art works in the form of Between Two Worlds at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art, with painting, sculpture, installation and photography.
Part of this included Lynch’s Factory Photographs, which Lynch himself said was a response to the contrast that it played to his rural upbringing as a child: “I grew up in the north-west of America where there are no factories at all, just woods and farms. But my mother was from Brooklyn, so when I was little we used to go there and I got a taste for a certain kind of architecture and a feeling for machines and smoke and fear.”
As a response to these Lynch photographs, experimental composer Lawrence English and Jamie Stewart of Xiu Xiu performed HEXA, a sound project built up of foreboding textures influences by industrialisation. The two met in 2009 and had since had the intention of collaborating musically. The work has been released as an album, entitled Factory Photographs via Room40. HEXA’s first performance took place at the Brisbane Gallery of Modern Art back in 2015, and will hold another performance of this work sometime in 2017 where Lynch’s Factory Photographs will also make a second appearance during this performance. English and Stewart’s soundtrack is now available to buy via the former’s Room 40 label
