On July 15 the excellent Sonic Cathedral will be putting out ‘New Forgetting’, the first single by Happy Families, the new band of Lawrence Chandler, formerly of Bowery Electric and all-round scholar of noise, and we’re excited to post a first play of the track – listen below:
Opening up with impained, metallic noise, the track unfurls into a beautifully-formed piece of melancholic guitar pop. While it may be a little tiresome to reference My Bloody Valentine in relation to a shoegaze cut, Happy Families take the resolutely bitter-sweet tonality of Isn’t Anything-era MBV, matched with their seismic, inhuman guitar sounds and strafe it with Lucia Rivero’s submerged, barely-heard vocal intonations, forging something that soothes as much as it sears.
The track comes backed with their version of the Ramones’ ‘I Remember You’ and will be available on both 7" and download; head over to Sonic Cathedral’s site to pre-order the track here. The band will be playing their first gig at the ace East End Live festival on July 13; head here for further details about the event.
