Hackney Venue MOTH Club Launches Petition Opposing Plans to Build New Flats Nearby

The venue said new proposals could place it at "serious risk"

MOTH Club in Hackney has launched a petition encouraging people to oppose plans to build new flats close to the venue.

Two separate planning proposals for the flats on Morning Lane, the road next to MOTH Club, have been submitted to Hackney Council. The team behind the venue have claimed that the plans have been split into applications deliberately in order to sidestep any obligations to include social housing.

The venue said the proposals could put them at “serious risk” in the future due to potential complaints from future residents of the housing. “While we fully support the need for more social and council housing, building multi-story blocks towering over an independent venue like MOTH would have devastating consequences for its future,” the venue said in a statement posted on Instagram.

Writing in the petition description, the venue added: “One of the planned blocks will have balconies directly overlooking MOTH’s smoking area and back onto the stage wall… a move that would lead to conflicts, noise complaints, and a serious threat to the venue’s ability to operate.”
