Pop art visionary Guy Peellaert died on Wednesday (Nov 17) following a heart failure.
The Belgian illustrator’s lurid photorealism most famously graced the cover of David Bowie’s Diamond Dogs LP, but Peellaert will also be remembered for his Rock Dreams and Twentieth Century Dreams tomes, produced alongside legendary British music scribe Nik Cohn.
Both volumes offered subversive takes on tabloid iconography with images including The Rolling Stones in Gestapo uniform with prepubescent girls and Richard Nixon and chairman Mao crying over a Lassie film.
Peellaert also created posters for the Wim Wenders films Wings of Desire and Paris, Texas, Martin Scorcese’s Taxi Driver and Robert Altman’s Short Cuts.
