Grouper Releases Album As Nivhek

Liz Harris takes on a new alias for her surprise latest release

Liz Harris, better known as Grouper, has surprise-released a new double album under the alias Nivhek.

Titled After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house, the albums take in "Mellotron, guitar, field recordings, tapes, and broken FX pedals," according to a press release. The music featured was recorded during two contrasting residencies in the Azores, Portugal and Murmansk, Russia, while other parts were made at Harris’ home in Oregon.

Harris cites the score she made for Hypnosis Display alongside filmmaker Paul Clipson in 2014 as a reference point. She adds that the tracks featured are inspired by "curiosity around a sadness," and describes them as "a requiem, a ritual, to unlock and release feelings."

After its own death / Walking in a spiral towards the house is out now via Yellow Electric and can be streamed above or purchased here. It follows on from last year’s Grouper album Grid Of Points, which featured in our list of 2018’s best albums.
