Golden Cabinet Announce Objekt Gig

With Bill Kouligas and Negra Branca on the bill

Continuing in their unceasingly top drawer line of gigs, Shipley night Golden Cabinet have announced that they’ll be hosting Objekt next year. He’ll be heading to Yorkshire on February 7, alongside PAN boss Bill Kouligas and Negra Branca, aka Gnod associate Marlene Ribeiro.

TJ Hertz, for Objekt is he, will be turning in a DJ set (he doesn’t play live), most likely drawing on parts of his excellent debut album Flatland, released on PAN this year. Writing about it on tQ, Joseph Burnett called it "body-shaking bliss", adding: "Flatland somehow exists in what feels like a hermetically sealed world of its own, an ethos espoused by the title and the austerity of Objekt’s approach, even at his most melodic… [it] feels perfectly formed out of the clay of a multitude of styles, and, with rhythms this tight, it’s something of a triumph." Take a look at Rory Gibb’s interview with Hertz from last year here.

As the review says, PAN is "a label about as audacious and on-the-pulse as any", an accurate description for an imprint that has put out releases by the likes of Lee Gamble, Morphosis, Heatsick, Rashad Becker, Helm, Jar Moff and Ben Vida in its six-year lifetime, as well as material by founder Kouligas, who’s released as himself, with Sudden Infant and as Family Battle Snake. We’re promised his Golden Cabinet will showcase all new material.

Marlene Ribeiro released her debut album as Negra Branca via Salford label Tesla Tapes last year, having, in her words, "been providing melodic and tonal dreamscapes for the Gnod Mothership since 2008". It was expanded for a vinyl reissue this year, and you can stream the album, an intoxicant fog of chant-like vocals, dubby basslines and loping drumbeats, at the foot of the piece.

Tickets are £11 and as ever the night boasts a bar stocked with local beer and vegan cakes. It’s being put on with help from Leeds’ Room 237 and you can get full details over at the website. Before then, their final gig of the year is Perc, this weekend. Suffice to say it’s sold out, but for any local residents, yes, that’s what that thunderous pummelling vibrating your door frames on Saturday is.
