Anarchic Swedish psych-prog collective Goat have announced their return in September with a second LP on Rocket Recordings. Commune, which will be distributed by Sub Pop in the US and Stranded Rekords in Scandinavia, continues in the same vein as 2012’s World Music, pooling musical resources from across the globe into a psychedelic menagerie. New single ‘Hide From The Sun’ is a slice of "proto-metal fuzz", successfully pulling off a fusion of tabla and sitar with hard rock, which in other hands could be a hazardous combination – take a listen above.
The masked group cultivate an air of ambiguity about them, with a backstory (they claim to hail from a tiny village in Sweden and that Goat has being going in various incarnations for up to forty years) in which it is hard to separate the actual from the fictional. ‘Hide From The Sun’ evinces a similar ambiguity musically, with its Eastern tinges being hard to pin down as either earnest imitation or knowing pastiche.
You can catch the band’s self-styled musical "magical realism" live in the UK this autumn as part of a Europe-wide tour, preceded by summer festival appearances. Their six UK dates include the Liverpool Psych Fest on September 27 and a concluding headline show at the Roundhouse in London on October 3. Commune will be released on September 22 – pre-order the record from Rocket here and head to their Facebook for tour listings.
