Harmony Korine, the director of forthcoming film Baby Invasion, has shared additional details about how Burial’s soundtrack for the movie came about.
At a press conference at Venice International Film Festival, which accompanied the new film’s premiere, the American filmmaker chose not to reveal how he first connected with Burial out of “respect”, according to a report by Variety, but said he had never actually met or spoken to the elusive Hyperdub-affiliated artist.
“I mean, Burial’s amazing,” Korine said at the press conference. “He’s a legend. We got in touch with each other, but I never actually met Burial and I never actually spoke with Burial. So it was all done through Discord messages, and we’d kind of talk on PS5. And then the music was sent through PS5.”
Baby Invasion is filmed in first-person shooter style, and follows a “group of mercenaries using baby faces as avatars” as they break into wealthy people’s homes, according to a synopsis shared by IndieWire. It’s Korine’s first film since 2023’s Aggro Dr1ft, which was soundtracked by US producer AraabMuzik. The director’s past credits include cult classics such as Gummo and Spring Breakers.
Burial’s soundtrack for the movie, which marks his second foray into film scores after working on Andrea Arnold’s Barry Keoghan-starring feature Bird, was described by Variety as “thumping techno”.
The UK artist released a split 12-inch single with Kode9, Phoneglow / Eyes Go Blank, via Hyperdub in June, and debuted on XL with the EP Dreamfear in February of this year.
