French Nightclubs Launch Initiative To Gain Cultural Status

A number of the country's venues are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Berlin's decision to recognise clubs in such a way

A campaign has been launched by various representatives of nightclubs and music venues in France to secure cultural status for such spaces.

Club-Culture involves 38 venues from across France, with the teams behind them working together to gain more recognition from policy makers and support them in their day-to-day running. Such recognition would mirror a similar move by Berlin’s local authorities in 2020 to recognise venues there as culturally significant and protect them against threats such as gentrification. This came about following work by the Clubcommission group, as well as the Parliamentary Forum For Club Culture & Nightlife.

I-Boat, Macadam, Rex Club, BADABOUM, KALT, La Machine Du Moulin Rouge, Le Petit Salon and Le Sucre are among the 38 venues involved in the campaign, while French music figures such as Laurent Garnier and Teki Latex have also expressed their approval for the initiative. A series of events to raise awareness about the movement took place this past weekend, between November 26 and 28. Find more information on the Club-Culture website.
