This Sunday May 11th, Purge will be hosting a screening of the experimental films of Dutch artist Frans Zwartjes, presented in their original 16mm format. Championed by Susan Sontag and described by the ICA as "filmmaker … painter, craftsman and musician: a polymath who defies categorisation, following in and ultimately expanding a tradition of great Dutch masters", it will be the first time Zwartjes’ films have been shown in the UK in this original form. The screening takes place at 16:30 on Sunday 11th May, and there will be a second screening on Tuesday 20th May at 6:45pm. For more information and tickets, click here to visit the ICA site.
The ICA screenings accompany the release by Purge of an album – in an edition of 50 cassettes – containing previously unheard music by Zwartjes, recorded by 1966 and 1999. You can watch an extract from ‘The Holy Family’, which features ‘Song 2’ from the cassette release, via the embed below. Copies of the cassette are limited, but available from the Purge website.
