Flying Lotus: More Album Details

Full details of Steven Ellison's new full-length, plus artwork and tour dates

Steven Ellison, aka cosmic hip-hop explorer Flying Lotus, is set to release his long-awaited new album Until The Quiet Comes. The follow-up to 2010’s Cosmogramma, it will be released through Warp on October 1st, and features a heady array of guest musicans: as well as previous collaborators Laura Darlington, Thundercat and Thom Yorke, it also drafts Erykah Badu and Niki Randa into the fold.

According to Ellison himself, the album is intended as "a collage of mystical states, dreams, sleep and lullabies". From the label’s description, it promises to be like its predecessors – Cosmogramma and 2008’s Los Angeles – in that it works best as an entire listen, apparently opening with a "twitching descent into a subconscious state", and continuing into an "out of focus time-ether of [a] journey". Its artwork, which you can see below, fits the description pretty well.

FlyLo’s regular touring and live shows – with a full band and various guest musicians – are also cited as a major influence on his melding of brain and body musics. "All this stylistic mingling and genre-melting has contributed significantly to shift the music in a direction that makes intellectual leaps without forsaking the all-important heft of a bassline or unimpeded ‘swing’ of a drum beat," says the text accompanying the album release, "the same way so many masters of soul music have infused their songs for lovers and dancers with brilliant and heady subtext for decades."
