Independent streaming platform MUBI will be premiering Ema for free, exclusively online for 24 hours on May 1.
While cinemas are shuttered and many new releases postponed, digital platforms are finding new methods to bring audiences some of the finest new films in a different format.
Pablo Larraín’s Ema has been picking up steam across festivals since last summer, and soon finds a wider audience to bask in its intoxicating glory. Starring rising star Mariana di Girolamo and Gael García Bernal, the film frames a dancer and her choreographer boyfriend as their relationship and world unravels following an adoption gone wrong.
With an original score, juddering and intoxicating, from Nicolas Jaar, the film offers a whirlwind portrait of modern-day Chile through the streets of Valparaíso, with fiery, dizzying visuals and heady intrigue.
MUBI, who are distributing Ema, are officially releasing the film on their platform from May 2 for their subscribers – which introduces one new hand-picked film every day for 30 days. On May 1, the film will be available to watch for free for everyone for 24 hours. As well as the virtual preview, there will also be a pre-recorded Q&A session with Di Girolamo about her role as the eponymous dancer.
