LISTEN: Chris Carter Remixes F.C. Judd

Listen to Throbbing Gristle/Carter Tutti man's tape-decayed interpretation of early electronics pioneer, from an upcoming LP on Public Information

London label Public Information have announced the release of Interpretations on F.C. Judd, a compilation gathering together a host of current names in electronic music to reinterpret the work of electronics pioneer Frederick Charles Judd.

The roster of artists contributing tracks to Interpretations reads like a cross-section of current underground music: Throbbing Gristle/Carter Tutti’s Chris Carter rubs shoulders with UK techno producer Perc and Editions Mego boss Peter Rehberg; Mordant Music and Leyland Kirby sit alongside frayed electronics from Ekoplekz and Bandshell, and dazzling collaged techno from Holly Herndon. Other contributors include Pye Corner Audio, Karen Gwyer, The Boats and filmmaker/audiovisual artist Ian Helliwell. We’re excited to be able to offer you an exclusive stream of Chris Carter’s scuzzy, tape-distorted ‘Flip Flop’ – listen via the embed below.

Interpretations follows on from Public Information’s release of an extensive compilation of Judd’s work last year, entitled Electronics Without Tears. For more information about Judd and his work, the label have created a special website exploring his history.

For the Interpretations project, each artist was given full access to the full archive of Judd’s "sounds, tone experiments, field recordings and lectures," and they were left to interpret them how they saw fit: "to produce an audio artefact befitting of Judd himself". So they’re less remixes than full-scale interpretations of his work. Indeed, many of the tracks feature Judd’s voice – from lectures or other recordings – prominently; many are largely beatless or feature heavily distorted or half-buried rhythms, and are shrouded in storms of radio static and interference. Its full tracklist runs as follows:

Ian Helliwell – ‘Solid States’

Perc – ‘Woodford’

Chris Carter – ‘Flip-Flop’

Holly Herndon – ‘Control Sample’

Mordant Music – ‘Hoarded House (reMMix Fredit)’

The Boats – ‘Space Judder’

Pye Corner Audio – ‘Splice Block’

Leyland Kirby – ‘Slim Jim Wimshurst Mechanicals’

Karen Gwyer – ‘Judd Drums’

Peter Rehberg – ‘FJUDDmix 032013’

Bandshell – ‘Concrete Teeth’

Ekoplekz – ‘Fredwrek’

Interpretations on F.C. Judd will be released by Public Information on 20th May – you can pre-order it from here.

Public Information are also preparing a pair of launch shows featuring artists from the compilation, taking place in London and Manchester. Stay tuned for further details to be announced.
