One of the tracks featured on Erasure’s (now sadly sold out) deluxe box set version of their Christmas album Snow Globe was a spoken word piece, ‘Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus’. The track draws on the famous editorial run in the September 21 1897 edition of the New York Sun, an unsigned response from one of the paper’s leader writers, Francis Pharcellus Church, to a letter from eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon’s letter asking about the existence of Santa Claus, which gets recited by Andrew King and Andy Bell. Says the latter: "It’s just very sweet and innocent because it’s from a very different time, but also, I think it is so poignant! If I was a parent I could imagine saying the same thing to my children but probably in not such an eloquent way." It’s now been given a remix by Barringer and Skerik, which, while not included in the box set, we’ve got an exclusive first play of here – listen below:
