Algerian producer El Mahdy Jr. has just released his new five-track EP Gasba Grime through Danse Noire Records. The record is an impressively menacing affair (see track four, ‘Crack-Addicted Bellydancer’) and includes a remix of ‘Lost Bridge’ by Killing Sound, the Bristol collective featuring Seb Gainsborough (Vessel), Amos Childs (Jabu, Zhou) and Sam Kidel (El Kid), which we’ve got a first play of above.
The new EP has been described as El Mahdy Jr.’s advancement into new territories, "weaving haunting Arabesque samples into his skittering club constructions". Speaking to The Wire recently, El Mahdy Jr. said: "Music ain’t just music. For me, the hidden story and the cultural background of a tune is always more attractive than the musical composition."
