The East End Live festival – taking place on July 13, following the Independent Label Market, across various different east London venues – has just bolstered its already-stellar bill by booking U.S. experimental rock pioneers Pere Ubu.

David Thomas and co will be playing their live soundtrack to 60s horror flick Carnival Of Souls at the event. It’s not their first time playing a live score to films, having previously accompanied It Came From Outer Space and X, The May With X-Ray Eyes, with Thomas saying of the event: "I grew up addicted to Friday night sci-fi/horror flicks. The genre had an incalculable effect on the third generation of young rock giants who emerged in the 70s. Now it’s time to honour that debt.

"The amateurish enthusiasm and naive intention, as well as lack of budget, of the B-movie encourages a kind of communal abstraction that approaches folk culture, and the frequent lack of a coherent agenda leaves lots of wiggle room for whatever personalised context or agenda an audience or band chooses to overlay. Wiggle room is good."

We recently looked back over Pere Ubu’s landmark The Tenement Year LP for an Anniversary piece, as well as talking to Thomas for A Quietus Interview in February. Have a watch of a rare clip of them performing ‘Modern Dance’ at the foot of the piece.

As well as Pere Ubu, the festival is also adding a whole rafter of new names to the bill: Happy Families, the new project of Bowery Electric’s Lawrence Chandler, who will be making their live debut at EEL (their debut single will be available from label Sonic Cathedral’s stall at the ILM), as well as Manflu, Mystyrys, Love L.U.V., COP, No, Public School Battalion, My Therapist Says Hot Damn, The Magnetic Mind and Beat Mark all join the line-up.

All of these come in addition to the existing line-up, which, with a limited number of £10 earlybird tickets still available, is an astronomical proposition: East India Youth, Teeth Of The Sea, TOY, Dethscalator, Grumbling Fur, Charles Hayward, Joseph Coward, Grass House, Purson, Comet Gain, Sauna Youth, Proper Ornaments, Throne, Los Cripis and Mickey Gloss, The Monochrome Set, Indesinence, Wet Nuns, Perspex Flesh, Charles De Goal, Scott & Charlene’s Wedding, Moon Zero, Skinny Girl Diet, Bong, Blurt, Filthy Boy, Neil’s Children, Ashkelon and Niqab, Edgar Smith, Limb, Good Throb and Weird Menace.
