Actress’ Werk Discs label and long-running London-based electronic hub Ninja Tune have announced that they have teamed up to form a working relationship. The label has previously released such gems as Actress’ debut album Hazyville and Zomby’s Where Were U In 92?, and this team-up pre-empts the release next year of Actress’ follow-up to this year’s stunning RIP album, Ghettoville. Presumably the partnership will work in a similar manner to Ninja’s work with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder label, which sees the Ninja team looking after UK press and distribution for the label.
Either way, it’s good news for fans of exploratory electronic music, firstly because this year the label is set to release a series of new 12"s as well as Lukid’s new album Lonely At The Top. And secondly because, to celebrate the team-up, they’re offering a free download of an exclusive track from Actress himself, ‘Metamorphosis’. You can nab it in exchange for an email address here.
If it’s anything to go by (and to be fair, based on previous form it probably isn’t), it bodes well for Ghettoville, suggesting that it might be a heavier and more club-friendly affair than the diffuse beatscapes of RIP. It’s one of his most direct techno tracks to date, in fact, setting static interference and kitchen-sink percussion above a thick wash of sub-bass and kick drum pulses. A dissonant dancefloor nightmare, basically, and all the better for it.
