Different Class: Jarv To Lecture On Tour

Former Pulp frontman tour to edutain the masses

Dancing and learning will be on the agenda if Jarvis Cocker gets his way on a forthcoming UK tour.

"Something I’m going to try on tour, God knows if it’ll work, is doing some spoken word things," Cocker told BBC news this week. The former Pulp frontman has been inspired by recent lectures on song lyrics given in Brighton and Manchester, the latter of which got The Quietus to thinking a couple of weeks back. "I did a couple of lectures," he explained. "I’m going to try and bring a bit of that into the concert maybe, in between songs."

What’s more, Cocker hopes to merge the cerebral with the bootylicious by wrapping up proceedings with a rave-up: "I’ve also got this idea that maybe we could in some ways try and morph the concert into a disco at the end," he said. "I’m looking into ways I could do that."

"It could be an absolute disaster, I don’t know. We’re going to do a few tests and see if it’s at all possible."

Cocker will also be debuting new material at the shows with titillating cuts from the as-yet unnamed second solo album which has "got arms, got eyes, [but is] not quite ready to come out yet".

"I’m trying to think of songs now in terms of what is going to be exciting to play live," he said. "That’s how it used to be. Bands formed and then they played in front of people and then took the trouble to record it. I think over time it’s gone a bit the wrong way round."

"The sign of whether a song’s any good or not is whether people jump up and down to it when you play live. Or you know if they react to it in some way, start crying. As long as they don’t leave the bar, or leave the room, then the song’s alright."
