Diamanda Galás To Release New Solo Piano Work

The 21-minute piece is based on Georg Heym's expressionist poem, 'Das Fieberspital (The Fever Hospital)'

Diamanda Galás is set to release a new solo work for piano.

Titled De-formation: Piano Variations, the 21-minute piece was composed and performed by Galás in September 2019. It’s based on German poet Georg Heym’s 1912 expressionist poem Das Fieberspital (The Fever Hospital).

This is Galás’ latest experiment with Das Fieberspital, having previously recorded different interpretations of a score to accompany the poem in recent years. The most recent incarnation of Das Fieberspital, which used solo voice, multitrack tapes of Galás’ vocal experiments and piano, was last performed at the Dark Mofo Festival in Tasmania in 2014.

"The Piano Variations were inspired by Galás’ work on the score for Das Fieberspital," a press release explains further. "In organising the work, she realised that the piano skeleton had become its own work and decided to record that in advance of the vocal work."

Intravenal Sound Operations will release De-formation: Piano Variations on July 24, 2020.
