THIS WEEKEND: Denovali Swingfest

London festival at Scala this weekend features heady roster including William Basinski, Andy Stott and Thomas Koner

This weekend, German record label Denovali will be holding the inaugural London edition of their annual Swingfest festival. Taking place this Saturday and Sunday – April 20th-21st – at the Scala in King’s Cross, it features an impressive range of artists, including the likes of Andy Stott, Thomas Koner, William Basinski, Fennesz and James Blackshaw.

Saturday will be headlined by knackered house/grubby techno doyen Andy Stott, whose Luxury Problems album was one of tQ’s favourites of last year. He’ll be joined by Bersarin Quartett, Fennesz, Maybeshewill, Omega Massif, Petrels and The Pirate Ship Quintet.

Sunday’s line-up is headed up by William Basinski, fresh off the back of re-releasing his classic Disintegration Loops as a deluxe boxset (you can read his recent interview with tQ’s John Doran here). He will be joined by Thomas Koner, whose Novaya Zemlya landed in our albums of 2012 list – keep an eye on the Quietus site on Wednesday for an in-depth interview with Koner – as well as Greg Haines, James Blackshaw, Poppy Ackroyd, Carlos Cipa and Talvihorros.

To celebrate the imminent arrival of the London festival, Denovali have put together a mixtape featuring all the artists playing on the bill – stream and download it via the embed below, and read the full tracklist here.

The Essen edition of the festival has been running since 2007 in Essen, hosting artists whose approach is in line with the label’s overall aesthetic, including Philip Jeck, Hauschka, Thomas Koner, Moritz Von Oswald Trio, Nadja, Sunn O))) and more. This year Denovali has expanded the festival to take in London and Berlin editions – Berlin’s took place earlier this month, and the Essen edition takes place in October.
