Deerhunter have announced a new album, titled Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?
Due out on January 18 through 4AD, the album will be their first in four years, following on from 2015’s Fading Frontier. The new albm features collaborations with Welsh singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon, White Fence’s Tim Presley, Ben H. Allen III and Ian Horrocks.
As a prelude to the album, Deerhunter have shared a video for the opening track, ‘Death in Midsummer’, melting harpsichord riffs and piano figures with Cox’s raspy voice for a seamless sound. You can check it out above.
Described as a "science fiction album about the present," Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? dives into the mechanisms of modern pop-culture and its reactionary nature. Supplementing a tracklist drawing on pivotal moments in history – including Labour MP Jo Cox’s assassination in 2016 – is a note from frontman Bradford Cox, painting a dystopian picture, which you can read in full below.
"here, the stars die in gardens
stale and malignant
Harpsichord and Bass Clarinet
composition of fabric and sulphur
matchless PRAX
Vampire Salon
of human dignity, compete
then we relax in glass
of no color
colorless liquid afternoons
of italian marble and
a gallery of snare sounds"
