Norwegian trio launch video for debut single

There’s now really no excuse for not loving Norway’s Deathcrush, and that applies to Luke Turner too (WAKE UP!). Having finally released their debut single – a flexi-disc that comes with a bright and brash Smash Hits-style magazine, complete with pullout posters and a ‘Which Deathcrusher R U?’ quiz – the band have today premiered the video for lead track ‘Lesson #13 For Nanker Phelge’ – watch above.

Nanker Phelge, fact fans, was the pseudonym used by The Rolling Stones for group compositions, and there’s a lyrical reference spelled out in the video. The track could certainly teach the pensioners a thing or two: ‘Lesson #13…’ is brimful with the kind of detuned, Sonic Youth guitars that made ‘Death Valley ‘69’ so thrilling, and oozes the kind of seductive, filthy, primitive sex appeal that makes one feel as ashamed as a man should at a peep show.

“We took it as a good sign when producer Jørgen Træen shouted out "youth music!", arms raised,” recalls one third of the band, Åse Røyset, speaking exclusively to the Quietus this morning. “Not that it stopped us sneaking in a couple of extra gong hits when we got home…”

The single is apparently the first in a series that Deathcrush will be releasing in the coming months, with the next due in May. “We’ll keep bombarding you with singles in different shapes and forms,” Røyset continued, “until we see it fit to round them up into one helluva compilation.”

The video, meanwhile, was edited and directed by the band themselves. “We have a home video-project going, filmed in our studio, Transgressive House,” says Røyset’s partner, guitarist/vocalist Linn Nystadnes, “with [Deathcrush and Årabrot drummer] Vidar’s artwork in the background. So this is pretty much our DCTV Cribs.”

The single can be ordered via Bandcamp – where it’s currently on the bestselling vinyl charts – here, and is also to be found on iTunes and Spotify.
