To cover production costs for LYNCHthree – the third in a trilogy of documentaries about the director’s life and work – David Lynch has made one of his self-portraits available to buy. A print of the piece can be purchased for $50 by any fan keen to contribute to the project.
The film’s producer, Jon Nguyen, said: "LYNCHthree benefits both financially and artistically from the online project through its dialogue with David’s fans. There are so many questions that we would like to ask David, and building a network of his fans allows us to hear what they would like to ask him if they could hold the camera."
Irate Quietus editor John Doran added: "That the world’s greatest living director is reduced to hawking portraits like this is a fucking outrage. I would personally take a cheese grater to any Hollywood financier not willing to put their expensively manicured hand into their silken and heavily laden with cash pocket, remove the top layer of epidermis forcefully, sous him in salt and vinegar and then push him naked into a skip full of broken lightbulbs."
