David Byrne has shared a new song, titled ‘She Explains Things To Me’.
Partially inspired by Rebecca Solnit’s book Men Explain Things To Me, the song finds Byrne reflecting on the ways that men dismiss women’s ideas and points of view. It’s the second cut to be shared from Byrne’s forthcoming album, Who Is The Sky?, after ‘Everybody Laughs’.
Speaking further about the new song, Byrne said: “Many times I have marveled at how a friend (usually a female friend) seems to clock what is going on in a film between characters way before I do. Sometimes I understand poetry, but sometimes I need help. Though inspired by the Solnit book Men Explain Things To Me, there is a huge difference – mansplaining is usually unasked for, in this case I am the one asking.”
Spanning 12 tracks, Who Is The Sky? was produced by Kid Harpoon and arranged by the members of New York-based chamber ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra. St. Vincent, Paramore’s Hayley Williams and Sons Of Kemet drummer Tom Skinner all appear on the LP, which is Byrne’s first since 2018’s American Utopia.
