Dan Snaith, better known as the man behind Caribou, is ready to release his first full-length as Daphni, his guise for more club-friendly fodder. The long-player JIAOLONG comes out on October 8 via Snaith’s own label of the same name, and is really rather brilliant.
Under the Daphni moniker, he’s previously done remixes of Cortney Tidwell, Hot Chip and Emeralds and put out a split 12”, ‘Ye Ye’, with Four Tet. The new record is born out of Snaith hitting the clubs, and, as the Guardian report, wanting to fight “the EDM barfplosion”.
“I’ve been surprised by the number of transcendent moments I, sober and in my mid-30s, have had in clubs in the last few years,” says Snaith. “The clichés about the collective consciousness of clubs seems to still hold water in some special cases. There is a small world where dance music lives up to its potential to liberate, surprise and innovate. It’s there that I hope Daphni has a place.”
“During the time I was making the Caribou album Swim, I’d fallen back in love with moments in small, dark clubs when a DJ puts on a piece of music that not only can you not identify, but that until you heard it, you could not have conceived of existing.”
