After deliberating this project for nearly eight years, righteous knight of the bass Mike Watt and The Go! Team’s Sam Dook finally got their shit together and produced Tamatebako, which was initially teased out as a special limited edition vinyl for Record Store Day. If you didn’t manage to bag yourself a copy then you’re going to have to settle with this tQ first-play album stream until the album gets a full release on May 19 via Bleeding Heart Recordings – have a listen above.
In line with one of Mike Watt’s recent conceptual flights of fancy, the album is cut from the cloth of Japanese folklore – a tamatebeko being an origami puzzle box that featured in the ‘Urashima Tarō’ legend – meeting its musical foil in syncopated strangeness and swaggering half-raps. Watch the site for a review of the record and head to Bleeding Heart to get hold of it upon release.
