For the second in their monthly nights at Hackney Picture House, Heavenly Films will be screening Culture, Alienation, Boredom and Despair, Kieran Evans and Robin Turner’s documentary on the early years of the Manic Street Preachers on May 2.
The film was initially planned as a short DVD extra for the remastered version of Generation Terrorists, but it is now set to be debuted in its full 88-minute-long glory. It captures an exciting era in the band’s career, from the labour of love in self-financed singles and pay-to-play gigs, to releasing their landmark debut with major label backing.
As well as the Manics themselves, the cast of people in the film include manager Martin Hall, Bob Stanley from Saint Etienne, producer Steve Brown and music writer James Brown.
The screening will be accompanied by five Manics videos, specially chosen by Nicky Wire, and there’ll also be a Q&A with Evans and Turner hosted by Travis Elborough, as well as a DJ set following the film, with exact details of the latter yet to be confirmed – watch this space.
