LISTEN: Cooly G Remixes Maxïmo Park

Hyperdub producer gives Brain Cells a wholesale reinvention on B-side to new single Give, Get, Take, out in December

After putting out one of our favourite albums of the year so far with Wait ‘Til Night, Cooly G’s now turned her hand to remixing Maxïmo Park’s ‘Brain Cells’, from this year’s Too Much Information album. It’s out as the B-side to their new single ‘Give, Get, Take’, released on December 1 via Daylighting, and we’ve got a first play. It’s not quite as disparate a pairing as you’d imagine; the original has Maxïmo Park transferring their urgent, melodic approach from guitars to spacious synths, but still Cooly casts the track in an entirely new light. She latches onto Paul Smith’s chorus self-interrogation, "Did I learn anything today? If I didn’t, will my brain cells fade away?", and places it among glacial, creeping loops, itchy drum patterns and dancefloor-bound hi-hats, the result being another fine addition to what’s rapidly becoming a massive year for her – listen above.
