Party! Colony Vs. Broken20 + tQ DJs

Colony team up with excellent Glasgow label for a night of esoteric electronics, sub-bass and techno, plus Quietus DJs

The good folk at Colony, who have been responsible for some of our favourite nights out in the capital over the last couple of years, have announced that their next party will be taking place on Friday 15th March at Stoke Newington’s Waiting Room. It will find them teaming up with one of the UK’s finest underground electronic labels, Glasgow’s Broken20, for an evening featuring a broad selection of the label’s artists.

Heading up the bill is Broken20 mainman TVO (occasionally known as The Village Orchestra), aka Ruaridh Law, whose work explores the boundaries between techno, static-riddled ambient and noise. Last year’s Red Night album was one of 2012’s underground gems, an unbroken suite of sludgy techno beats and shifting clouds of distortion based around William Burroughs’ book Cities of the Red Night, and he is about to release an excellent new collaborative album of reinterpretations of that material entitled Red Night Variations. Keep an eye out for an in depth interview with TVO on the Quietus in the very near future. He’ll be DJing on the night.

Joining him are Broken20’s other label heads Erstlaub, who creates beautiful, crumbling drones that suggest slow processes of decay, and Production Unit, who draws influence from techno, UK sound system musics and more to create restlessly shapeshifting club-rooted tracks. Both will be playing live. In addition, Szare – the Manchester-based duo responsible for some of the most darkly funky techno around at the moment – and Spatial, Infrasonics boss and creator of crisp and angular takes on garage and bass-driven house, are also on the bill, ahead of releases on B20 later this year.

Colony residents MB & CB and Tengui, who will also be playing, have also invited the Quietus down to spin some records on the night. tQ’s Rory Gibb and Luke Turner will be taking to the Waiting Room decks to play some music of an appropriately moody persuasion to match the occasion. It promises to be an excellent night all round, and runs all the way from 8pm until 4am, as an extended gig/club night combination.
