Chris Watson and Professor Tony Myatt are talking on infrasonic elephant communication at a one day conference in London on 8 January 2018, which also includes a new commission by experimental musician Laura Cannell. Watson and Myatt will be presenting their research through a system equipped with multiple subwoofers, and Cannell performs a new work for bass recorder, at a conference themed around the presence, agency and materiality of air.
It also includes papers on listening to birdsong in WWI trenches; thunder as the first dub; the use of clouds in contemporary art; amateur weather watching; sounding James Turrell’s Skyspaces; live micro FM transmissions from a Marconi wireless station; shock waves on the North Kent Marshes in 1916, and the 2017 solar eclipse, among others.
The conference is a one-day multi-disciplinary academic conference at London College of Communication in Elephant and Castle, titled Large Objects Moving Air. The keynote is independent researcher and writer JR Carpenter, who is talking on her recent publication The Gathering Cloud, and digital artist James Dooley has been commissioned to install a new artwork for the day. His work, Have you talked about the weather today? uses live data from the International Space Station to ask questions about our experiences of the weather from interior spaces.
