According to Calexico’s Joey Burns, new track ‘Para’ nearly didn’t see the light of day as, it was, he felt, “too confessional”. Discretion’s loss is our gain, though, as you can hear the brooding, dark track above, accompanied by a video that goes back past 80s beach megalolz nostalgia footage to grainy film of a childhood at some point in the 50s or 60s. ‘Para’ is taken from Calexico’s forthcoming new album Algiers, which is released via City Slang on September 7th. The record was made in New Orleans, as Burns explains: “We were talking about wanting to go to Europe and record,” Burns says, “but we never get our shit together in time to make plans that far in advance. So where do you go that is nearby and has a European feel? New Orleans.”
