Mute have announced that they’ll be reissuing Sheffield electronic pioneers Cabaret Voltaire’s landmark 1981 album Red Mecca (artwork above) on July 22.
Taking inspiration from, variously, Middle Eastern music, Orson Welles and CB radio, the album, the band’s third, was the final with founder member Chris Watson (take a look at our Things I Have Learned interview with Watson from earlier this year), Richard H. Kirk stating that it reflected the rioting and unease in Britain at the time: “that insurrection on the streets found its way into the music”.
It’s set to be the first in a series of CV rereleases, which will continue with #8385 (Collected Works 1983 – 1985) in the autumn, collecting The Crackdown, Micro-Phonies, Drinking Gasoline and The Covenant, The Sword And The Arm Of The Lord albums, ahead of a compilation, #7885 (Electro Punk to Techno Pop 1978 – 1985), at the beginning of next year.
