Two benefit concerts that Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band played at New York’s Madison Square Garden in 1979 are the focus of a new film and album, The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts.
Out in November, the album is a 90-minute combination of the two performances, taking in tracks from both nights. The film features their performances of ‘The River’, ‘Born To Run’, ‘Badlands’, ‘Thunder Road’ and more, and is edited by frequent Springsteen collaborator Thom Zimny from the original 16mm film recording. US recording engineer Bob Clearmountain was brought on board to remaster the audio.
The album and film feature appearances from Jackson Browne, Tom Petty and Rosemary Butler. Three songs from the release were previously featured in the 1980 documentary No Nukes, released as an accompaniment to the benefit concerts.
Speaking about the release, Thom Zinny says: "I quickly realised that these were the best performances and best filming from the Band’s legendary ’70s, and dedicated myself to bringing out the full potential of the footage. Having worked as Bruce’s principal director and editor for the last 20 years, I can say without reservation that this newly re-edited, re-mixed and restored 90-minute film is the gold standard for Bruce and the Band live during one of their greatest creative periods."
Sony Music will release The Legendary 1979 No Nukes Concerts on November 19, 2021.
