Never ones to blow their own trumpets, British Sea Power have enlisted none less than the brass band of the teachers’ trade union to do it for them for a one-off collaboration at Brass: Durham International Festival next week. They’ll be revisiting songs from their back catalogue and giving them a brass-gilded polish, with the help of the NASUWT Riverside Band and arranger Peter Wraight of the Matthew Herbert Big Band.
The gig, titled Heart Of Brass, is on Thursday 17 July, with Jo Hamilton performing material from her forthcoming second album Fractals, accompanied by musicians from the Corps of Army Music, in Durham Cathedral, the day after, July 18, while Lanterns On The Lake get backed up by the Durham County Youth Big Band on the same day. There’s also the BBC Big Band, the Brighouse & Rastrick Brass Band, The Stars From The Commitments, John Kefala-Kerr and John Faddis and The Andy Champion Quintet on the bill for the festival, which runs from July 11-20; head to the website for full details and tickets.
