Boothroyd’s dark-hued, fractious and fractal debut EP Idle Hours, released by Tri Angle in September, marked an ace continuation of a fine year for the label, following up on some prime releases of hefty electronics from Evian Christ, Sd Laika, Fis and Vessel. We’ve got an interview with the London-based, Manchester-born producer coming up on the site shortly, but before then, Tri Angle have kindly given us a first look at Nic Hamilton’s video for the EP’s closer, ‘Y5’. It draws on David Rudnick’s designs, which alternate between descending paint splashes and a digital vista of what looks like a draped, ash-coated warehouse. The images track the music’s kinetic shifts, beats ushering in rapid cuts and light effects. A layer of scuttling electronic matter chimes with a panning gaze around the interior, while later shadows move across the surfaces as the sound of what once may have been a scream, digitally-warped into something else, get riven with strafing percussion, tacked to light-flicker and disarmingly unsettling.
