Birds Eye View celebrate female filmmakers past and present with a trio of London events this week, starting Thursday March 8 at BFI Southbank with an International Women’s Day showcase of new shorts from around the world, including the UK premieres of Spanish drama The Red Virgin, starring Maribel Verdú (Y Tu Mamá También) and Ivana Baquero (Pan’s Labyrinth), and Norwegian musical Baldguy (aka Skallamann, pictured). There will also be a post-screening discussion panel including screenwriter Moira Buffini and writer-director Sally El Hosaini.
Friday sees the return of BEV’s popular Sound & Silents series to the Purcell Room, with three contemporary musicians – folk fusionist Roshi, experimental multi-instrumentalist Tanya Auclair and electronic/modern classical composer Anna Meredith – performing newly commissioned scores for a programme of films featuring early Hollywood icon Mary Pickford. There’s further live soundtrack action on Sunday afternoon at Hackney Picturehouse, where Guillemots bassist/co-vocalist Aristazabal Hawkes will accompany the 1926 Pickford production Sparrows.
