The archive of composer Bernard Herrmann – responsible for the soundtracks to Psycho and The Day The Earth Stood Still amongst other films – is to be reworked by sound artist and theremin player Sarah Angliss for an upcoming stage adaptation of 1960s TV show The Twilight Zone.
The stage version was adapted by Anne Washburn from the TV series and has been directed by Richard Jones. Sarah Angliss is working closely with fellow sound designer Christopher Shutt on the soundtrack.
"This has been a painstaking exercise – it’s taken months to edit the scores and refine the cut, working closely with the director, choreographer and actors in the rehearsal room," says Angliss. "I’m using the seminal Twilight Zone music, sometimes augmenting it with my own contemporary techniques, for instance using Max and theremin, to create time distortions and brooding sonic miasmas. I want to conjure that underlying sense of jeopardy and dread people felt when they first saw The Twilight Zone on TV."
The production will be shown at the Almeida Theatre in London between December 5 and January 27. For more information, head here.
