Berghain To Reopen As Art Gallery

An exhibition will take in work from 85 Berlin-based artists

Berghain is reopening parts of its space next month as an art gallery.

Having been closed as a club since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team behind the Berlin venue have been seeking new ways to put the space to use in compliance with social distancing measures. Studio Berlin is one of the alternative events that has been given the green light, with the group exhibition set to take in work from 85 Berlin-based artists including Wolfgang Tillmans, Sandra Mujinga, Tacita Dean, Christine Sun Kim, Shirin Sabahi, and Olafur Eliasson.

The exhibition will open on September 9, and will extend across the club’s huge main room, as well as other regularly used club spaces inside such as Panorama Bar and Saüle. It’s the brainchild of art collectors Christian and Karen Boros, and proceeds from ticket sales will go towards keeping Berghain going through the pandemic.

The show’s curators say that the exhibition will focus on "the studio as a space for contemplation and production." In keeping with the club’s usual policy, visitors will not be allowed to take photos inside the venue.

Studio Berlin follows on from a recent sound installation that the venue’s Kessel Hall hosted last month.
