Decided on by DJs, journalists and other industry voters, while it’s frequently a good harbinger for commercial success – Adele and Michael Kiwanuka have both previously taken home top honours – it’s also a safely conservative index of next year’s tips for the top.
It is, though, gratifying to see Quietus favourites Savages and Angel Haze get mentions, while Peace and Kodaline have both been dealing in interesting material recently. And while The Weeknd is a solid nomination, it seems a little late to be including an artist who should rightly have been given a spot on last year’s list.
The five shortlisted acts will be announced on consecutive days beginning on New Year’s Eve, with Huw Stephens naming the winner on January 4.
