Autechre have remixed SOPHIE’s 2013 track ‘BIPP’.
Out digitally today, the remix has been long in the making with Glasgow label Numbers, which originally released the track, first floating the idea of commissioning remixes of SOPHIE’s work in 2015. SOPHIE’s response at the time, a press release says, was an unequivocal no, "unless it’s Autechre."
After one-half of Autechre responded to the initial ‘BIPP’ promo, the label floated the idea of a remix but found they were already wrapped up in other projects. "We persisted, and in 2018 (three years later) sent every SOPHIE stem and sysex file possible from PRODUCT (2015) hoping they might do something unexpected across all the tracks," the label says, adding that the duo’s live commitments at the time proved a stumbling block at that point.
However, mid-last year, Numbers received an email from the duo saying, "Sorry this is so late, hope it’s still of some use," with the finished remix attached. The remix, which you can listen to above, sees the duo pitch-shifting the original’s glossy vocal, layering it over an unfussy drum loop.
Numbers will release Autechre’s remix of ‘BIPP’ alongside a previously unreleased track from SOPHIE called ‘UNISIL’, which was produced around the time of 2015’s PRODUCT. The EP will be available across digital and live formats.
Numbers will release BIPP (Autechre Mx) / UNISIL on January 28, 2021.
