Photographs, never-heard-before recordings and collections of lyrics from Arthur Russell’s archives will go on display at the Brooklyn Academy of Music this spring.
As FACT reports, this will mark the first time that the late musician’s personal archives have been displayed publicly having been acquired recently by the New York Public Library. A selection of those archives have been chosen for display as part of an exhibition called Do What I Want: Selections from the Arthur Russell Papers.
As part of the exhibition, a film night will also take place at Brooklyn Music Hall’s cinemas on April 20, taking in screenings of 2008 documentary Wild Combination and a performance by Arthur Russell captured on video. The screenings will be followed by a panel featuring Russell’s partner, Tom Lee, director Matt Wolf and Steve Knutson, owner of Audika Records, a label responsible for a number of Arthur Russell archival releases.
