Arcade Fire have won Canada’s Polaris Prize 2011 for their third album The Suburbs, fighting off competition from the likes of Destroyer, Timber Timbre and The Weeknd. The award and $30,000 prize was collected by band members Jerry Gara and Richard Parry at a ceremony in Toronto.
The Suburbs was something of a return to form for Arcade Fire, after the slightly pompous, overblown Neon Bible – on its release last summer we said the band had "played a blinder by ditching the faux apocalyptic Springsteenisms of Neon Bible and allowing their songs ample room to breathe".
